Retirement might feel far off, or it might be just around the corner. Either way, the years leading up to retirement are some of the most powerful when it comes to growing your pension and setting yourself up for financial freedom.
And in Ireland, there are several smart strategies you can use to make the most of your pension before you retire.
Here’s how to maximise your pension – and make sure your retirement is as comfortable as possible.
1. Make Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs)
If you’re a member of an occupational pension scheme, consider topping up your contributions with AVCs. These are extra payments that go directly into your pension pot and can significantly boost your retirement income.
AVCs also qualify for tax relief – which means you’re saving more, and paying less tax.
2. Use Up Your Annual Tax Relief Limits
In Ireland, you can claim tax relief on pension contributions up to certain age-based limits. The older you are, the more you can contribute with tax benefits.
For example:
- Under 30 : 15% of your income up to a max salary of €115k
- Age 30 – 39 : 20%
- Age 40–49: 25%
- Age 50–54: 30%
- Age 55–59: 35%
- Age 60 and over: 40%
If you’re getting closer to retirement, this is a powerful way to save more while reducing your income tax bill.
3. Consolidate Old Pensions
If you’ve moved jobs, you might have multiple pension pots sitting in different schemes. These can be harder to manage – and may come with higher fees.
Consolidating them into one plan can simplify your retirement planning or at least force you to find all the paperwork so you won’t have to at retirement.
Not sure what pensions you hold? You may have a lost pension in Ireland. It’s more common than you think.
4. Review Your Investment Strategy
As you get closer to retirement, it’s wise to review how your pension is invested.
Are your funds still suited to your retirement goals and timeline? Should you reduce risk as you approach your retirement age? Are you in the default fund, or could you choose a better fit?
These decisions can make a big difference in the final value of your pension.
5. Understand Your Retirement Options
Do you plan to take a tax-free lump sum? Will you invest the rest into an Approved Retirement Fund (ARF)? Are you eligible for the full State Pension?
The more informed you are, the better decisions you’ll make in those crucial final years before retirement.
This is where talking to a qualified financial planner makes all the difference.
