How to Close the Gender Pension Gap in Ireland

You’ve probably heard of the gender pay gap., but have you heard of the gender pension gap?

Because it’s bigger. And no one talks about it.

In Ireland, women retire with up to 36% less in their pension pot than men. That’s a huge financial disadvantage – and it’s not because women are bad with money.

So, where does the gender pension gap come from?

According to the Gender Pension Parity Report (2024), there are two key contributors:

1. Lower average salaries

Women in Ireland still earn less than men overall, particularly in their 30s and 40s—the very years when pension contributions have the most long-term impact due to compound growth. Less income = smaller contributions = smaller pensions.

2. More time out of paid work

On average, women in Ireland take six years out of the workforce—often for maternity leave, caregiving, or part-time roles. That’s six years of missed contributions, lost employer top-ups, and lost investment growth.

Meanwhile, many men contribute consistently throughout their careers. – which means by the time women reach retirement age, they’d need to work eight extra years just to catch up. (Yes, really.)

And to top it off? Women live longer. Which means their smaller pensions have to stretch even further.

This isn’t about blame. It’s about awareness. Because once you understand the gap – you can start closing it.

So, what can women do to close the pension gap?

Here are four practical steps:

Check your pension contributions Look at what you’re contributing now and what that means for your future. Is it enough to sustain the lifestyle you want?

Understand the impact of career breaks If you’ve taken time off, or plan to, ask your provider how that affects your pension. Some women choose to increase contributions later to make up for missed years.

Ask your employer about supports Some employers offer matched contributions or schemes to help with AVCs (Additional Voluntary Contributions). If you’re not sure—ask.

Consider starting AVCs Even small additional payments can make a big difference over time, especially if you’re closer to retirement age.

Why this matters

A secure retirement shouldn’t be a gendered privilege. But right now, too many women are heading into retirement with significantly less—and often, without even realising it.

We believe every woman deserves clarity and confidence around her pension plan.
